The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)
A public-private partnership, spearheaded by national governments, the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which has reduced the global incidence of polio by 99%. The aim of the GPEI is the global eradication of this disease, to ensure that no child will ever again suffer the devastating effects of polio.
An organization established and run by Dr Ron Rice, a retired Presbyterian pastor from Seattle, USA, and his Nigerian partner Ayuba Gufwan, a polio survivor himself. At their shop in Jos, Nigeria, with 65 employees, they have built over 21,000 wheelchairs and donated them to Nigeria’s polio survivors, who otherwise spend their lives crawling on the ground. The website features very impactful videos, giving clear and compelling visual testimony of the need to provide support to persons crippled by polio.
